University of Benin insists on “no school fees, no exams” policy as defaulters ignore reminders and student loan option.

BENIN CITY, EDO STATE – At least 5,000 students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) may be prevented from writing the second-semester examinations scheduled to begin on Monday, September 29, 2025, following their failure to settle outstanding school charges.

In a memo signed by the Registrar, Mr. Ademola Bobola, the institution reaffirmed its strict “no school fees, no examination” policy, warning that defaulters who ignore payment deadlines will not be accommodated.

According to the registrar, despite repeated reminders, thousands of students have yet to pay their charges or subscribe to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) facility designed to assist those unable to meet financial obligations.

“The university management is in receipt of the list of students who have failed to pay their school charges despite repeated reminders. These students have also failed to subscribe to the students’ loans being provided by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND),” Bobola stated.

He added that several efforts by the school to encourage affected students to either make direct payments or take advantage of the government-backed loan scheme had been unsuccessful.

With examinations just days away, the institution emphasized that only students who comply with the payment directive or secure NELFUND support will be allowed into exam halls.

The announcement has sparked tension among students, with concerns that a significant number could miss the crucial examinations if urgent steps are not taken.
