Nollywood star closes defamation case, shows compassion after young TikToker’s apology and personal loss.
Nollywood star Dayo Amusa has announced that she has forgiven TikTok content creator Olaoluwa Segun (known online as unofficial_olas001), who falsely alleged that she was HIV positive.
The controversy began in July when Segun listed Amusa among five Nigerian actors he claimed were living with HIV. The actress swiftly debunked the allegation, explaining that he had misused an old post from 2019 in which she disclosed her HIV-negative status as part of a campaign encouraging fans to get tested.
Outraged at the defamation, Amusa initially vowed to pursue legal action. “Why do content creators and bloggers post unverified information? I have family and friends who read these lies. He will be my scapegoat and serve as a lesson to others. I am HIV negative,” she declared at the time.
However, in a video shared on her Instagram page on Monday, the actress revealed she had a change of heart. According to her, she decided to show compassion after learning that Segun had just lost his mother, was only 27 years old, and had met with his family, including his uncle.
“I did promise to make him a scapegoat, which I initially did. But along the line, I discovered his personal struggles and his young age. That made me reconsider,” Amusa explained.
She also posted a video of Segun tendering a public apology. “I want to apologise to her fans. I’m very sorry about what I did. Now we’re friends,” he said.
In her caption, Amusa thanked her supporters, writing: “Case closed. To err is human, to forgive is divine. Making mistakes is a natural and inherent part of being human. Let’s be guided.”
Meanwhile, Segun also released a video on his TikTok page, recounting how he spent two nights in detention at Yaba Panti Police Station over the incident. “Aside from losing my mum, that was the worst experience of my life. I want to thank Aunty Dayo Amusa for forgiving me. If not for her compassion, I would have spent much longer in detention. I don’t pray to ever sleep in a cell again,” he said.
The episode, which initially sparked outrage on social media, has now been brought to a close by Amusa’s decision to let go and forgive.
