Archbishop Endorses Abel Damina: Says Bible Doesn’t Ban Women from Wearing Trousers

Archbishop Osazee Williams, International Secretary of the Ecumenical Synods of Bishops, Archbishops, Apostles, and Senior Clergy in London, has publicly backed Nigerian preacher Dr. Abel Damina’s teaching that the Bible does not forbid women from wearing trousers. His support comes amid ongoing debates rooted in the interpretation of Deuteronomy 22:5.

In a widely circulated sermon, Dr. Damina argued that the often-cited verse does not specifically mention trousers or skirts. Rather, it addresses the issue of crossdressing within its historical and cultural context. He warned that taking such scriptures out of context leads to misinterpretation and opens the door to religious manipulation.

Speaking in a recent interview, Archbishop Williams affirmed Damina’s position and urged believers to study the Bible with proper contextual understanding. “Scripture must be interpreted in light of its culture and intended message,” he stated. He pointed out that cultural differences shape fashion norms—citing examples like Scottish men wearing kilts and Nigerian ethnic groups such as the Urhobo, where men traditionally wear wrappers.

Williams further noted that trousers can actually be more practical for women due to their comfort and mobility. “Trousers give women better freedom of movement. There’s absolutely nothing sinful about that,” he said. However, he emphasized that modesty and decency—not rigid dress codes—should guide how individuals present themselves. “Morality isn’t in the fabric; it’s in the intention. Women should dress responsibly, but that doesn’t mean excluding trousers,” he added, advocating for stylish and modest trouser suits.

The Archbishop’s remarks have reignited public debate on biblical dress codes and the cultural lens through which modesty is viewed.
