Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has criticised Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision to formally recognise the State of Palestine, describing the move as “absolutely disastrous.”

The United Kingdom, alongside Australia and Canada, on Sunday September 21, 2025, recognised a Palestinian state in a major shift in Western foreign policy. Britain and Canada became the first G7 nations to take the step, with France and other countries expected to follow at the UN General Assembly opening Monday in New York.

The announcement was welcomed by pro-Palestinian groups but triggered swift anger from Israel and drew criticism from the opposition.

Badenoch, in a statement on X, said the decision would backfire.

“Absolutely disastrous. We will all rue the day this decision was made. Rewarding terrorism with no conditions whatsoever put in place for Hamas. It leaves hostages languishing in Gaza and does nothing to stop the suffering of innocent people caught in this war,” she wrote.

The Conservative leader accused Labour of prioritising “hard left” agendas over solving Britain’s domestic problems. She cited failures in health, jobs, and immigration while accusing Starmer of “appeasing student union campaigns.”

“Everything we are seeing is a consequence of a Prime Minister who has no plan for the country and no judgment. He will spend the next four years delivering the hobby horses of the Labour left to stay in power and leave a huge mess for us to clean up,” she said.

Starmer, however, defended the recognition, saying it was aimed at reviving the possibility of peace.

“Today, to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine,” the prime minister posted on X.
