Governor’s Security Team Ambushed Near Imo Airport; No Casualties Reported as Investigations Begin

No casualties reported; main convoy unharmed as security forces ramp up patrols and investigation.

Unidentified gunmen ambushed an advance security team of Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Tuesday morning along the road to Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport in Imo State.

The attack occurred between Umuowa and Ihitte junction—just kilometers from the airport—as the three-man team traveled ahead to prepare for the governor’s movement.

In a statement, Governor Otti’s Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, confirmed the governor’s main convoy was not involved and that no lives were lost.

“The public is hereby informed that the convoy of His Excellency was not involved, and no casualties were recorded in this unfortunate incident,” the statement read.

The Abia State Government announced that security agencies have launched an investigation, with further details to follow. Authorities have also pledged heightened surveillance and increased patrols along the Imo Airport corridor and interstate routes across the Southeast—a response to growing regional security concerns.
