BREAKING: Mauritius Retains Title as Africa’s Most Peaceful Nation for 18th Consecutive Year

PORT LOUIS — Mauritius has once again been recognised as the most peaceful country in sub-Saharan Africa, maintaining its position for the 18th consecutive year, according to the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI) released by the Institute for Economics and Peace.

Despite a marginal 1.5% decline in its overall peace score—attributed to setbacks in militarization and internal security—the island nation remains a regional leader in stability and non-violence.

The GPI report describes Mauritius as a “regional exception,” noting that it is the only country in sub-Saharan Africa to have avoided both internal and external conflict over the past six years. It also highlights the nation’s political resilience, citing an orderly and peaceful transition of power after a recent opposition landslide victory.

“This peaceful transfer has reinforced democratic institutions,” the report stated, further crediting the country’s performance to “sustained economic growth and a robust tourism industry.”

Mauritius ranks 26th globally on the 2025 index, with Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, and Switzerland claiming the top five positions. Singapore follows closely in sixth place.
