BREAKING : Nigerian Billionaire and Philanthropist, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, Dies at 94
Kano, Nigeria — One of Nigeria’s most prominent businessmen and philanthropists, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, has died at the age of 94. The elder statesman passed away in the early hours of Saturday, June 28, 2025, after a protracted illness associated with aging.
A close aide confirmed the news, stating that Dantata died peacefully at his residence in Kano. Funeral prayers, in accordance with Islamic rites, will be held shortly, with further details expected from the family.
Alhaji Dantata, born on May 19, 1931, was a towering figure in Nigerian commerce, industry, and philanthropy. He was the son of the legendary Alhassan Dantata, a renowned West African merchant. Continuing the family legacy, Aminu Dantata played a key role in expanding the Dantata business empire, establishing himself as a respected investor in petroleum, construction, real estate, and finance.
He was the founder of Express Petroleum & Gas Company Ltd and played a major role in the establishment of Jaiz Bank, Nigeria’s first Islamic non-interest financial institution.
In addition to his business ventures, Dantata was deeply involved in public service. He once served as a member of the National Council of States and was part of the Constitution Drafting Committee for the 1979 Constitution of Nigeria. His leadership and influence extended well beyond the boardroom, earning him national and international recognition for his philanthropic efforts, especially in education, healthcare, and Islamic development.
Tributes have poured in from political leaders, business magnates, and civil society figures across the country. Many have described him as a “humble giant” whose generosity, wisdom, and patriotism helped shape Nigeria’s modern economic landscape.
The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), in a statement, expressed deep sorrow over his passing and promised to honor his legacy in a befitting manner.
Alhaji Aminu Dantata is survived by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, many of whom are also active in business and public service.
His death marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s history — a man who lived for the advancement of his people and his nation.
