Breaking: Razor-Throat COVID Variant ‘Nimbus’ Spreads Rapidly Across U.S. States

A new COVID-19 variant dubbed “Nimbus” — scientifically known as NB.1.8.1 — is rapidly spreading across the United States, with confirmed cases reported in at least 15 states, including California, Virginia, Washington, and New York.

Nicknamed the “razor blade throat” variant due to the intense sore throat pain it causes, Nimbus has caught the attention of health professionals worldwide. Physicians in the UK, India, and other affected regions have reported unusually sharp throat pain as a standout symptom, unlike what was commonly seen in earlier COVID-19 strains.

While classic symptoms such as fever, cough, and loss of smell still appear in many cases, the severe throat irritation associated with Nimbus is emerging as a key marker — and may be contributing to rising case numbers in some areas.

The variant is believed to be spreading primarily through international travel, with U.S. health agencies now increasing surveillance at airports and medical facilities.

Despite its growing footprint, health officials are urging calm, stating that the strain, while fast-moving, does not currently represent a serious public health threat. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Nimbus accounted for approximately 11% of all globally sequenced COVID cases as of mid-May.

However, public health experts emphasize the importance of ongoing monitoring and rapid response, warning that the evolution of new variants remains a persistent challenge in the post-pandemic world.

Residents are advised to stay informed, observe basic hygiene measures, and consult medical professionals if they experience intense throat pain alongside other COVID-19 symptoms.
