Conservative activist Charlie Kirk fatally shot during Utah Valley University debate; suspect seen fleeing rooftop with long rifle

Chilling new footage appears to show the suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk moving across a rooftop just moments after the attack at Utah Valley University (UVU) on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

The video, recorded from inside a UVU building behind the tent where Kirk was speaking, captured the panic among the roughly 3,000 attendees as the first shots rang out. People immediately dropped to the ground for cover, while a small, dark figure was seen moving across a building across the quad—believed to be the gunman fleeing the scene.

“Look closely at the roof; the shooter is running away just after Charlie was shot,” noted one observer on social media.

Earlier footage from the UVU campus shows a dark shape lying prone on the rooftop from which the gunman reportedly fired. Spectators nearby appeared bewildered, unsure of what they were witnessing.

“There’s somebody on the roof right there,” one witness said. “He just ran from over there, ran in, now he’s right there.”

Kirk, founder of conservative nonprofit Turning Point USA, was fatally shot while responding to a question about mass shootings committed by transgender individuals in the U.S. Audience-recorded video shows Kirk slumping in his chair as blood poured from his neck. Security quickly rushed him offstage, but he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Emergency dispatchers struggled to locate the suspect as the chaos unfolded. Two people were initially taken into custody but later released. Dispatch recordings describe the gunman as wearing jeans, a black shirt, and a black vest, armed with a long rifle, and positioned atop a building east of the school’s library.

Kirk was well-known for his open-mic “Prove Me Wrong” debates on college campuses, which encouraged community members to challenge his conservative views. At the time of his death, he was participating in the American Comeback Tour.

He is survived by his wife, former Miss Arizona Erika Frantzve, and their two young children.
