The Rivers State Police Command has warned against the fraudulent practice of collecting transport fare without showing up for agreed meetings. Authorities say the act amounts to obtaining money under false pretence and is punishable under the Nigerian Criminal Code.
The Rivers State Police Command has issued a strong warning over the growing trend of collecting transport fares under false pretences and failing to honour appointments. The Command described the practice, which has become increasingly common in Rivers State and across Nigeria, as fraudulent and punishable under the Criminal Code.
According to a statement released on Tuesday, the Command highlighted that many individuals particularly young womenhabitually request or accept transport money from men with the promise of visiting them, only to deliberately fail to show up.
“The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to the growing practice of collecting transport fare from unsuspecting men and deliberately failing to keep the meeting. Members of the public are advised to desist from this behaviour, as it is considered fraudulent and punishable by law,” the statement read.
Police authorities stressed that such behaviour falls under obtaining money under false pretence, an offence clearly defined by the Nigerian Criminal Code. Offenders risk arrest, prosecution, and possible conviction if caught engaging in this act.
The Command further advised Rivers State residents and the general public to uphold honesty in their dealings and avoid actions capable of damaging their reputation or resulting in criminal liability.
Reiterating its zero-tolerance stance on fraudulent activities, the Rivers State Police Command assured the public that no form of scam, regardless of how minor it may appear, will be ignored. The Command emphasized its commitment to law enforcement and to protecting citizens from deceptive practices, including transport fare scams.
