The Federal College of Education, Obudu, in Cross River State, has announced the suspension of Dr. Ugbaha Utubaku, the Provost, over allegations of maladministration and gross misconduct.

The institution’s Governing Council took the decision following multiple petitions from the Deans of Schools and the three major staff unions in the College: the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), the Senior Staff Union in Colleges of Education, Nigeria (SSUCOEN), and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), as well as concerns raised by the Director of Procurement.

In a letter titled “Letter of Suspension and General Inefficiency” and signed by the Registrar and Secretary of Council, Evans Iyenya (Reference: FCE/OB/REG/CT-A/Vol.II/273), the suspension was formally communicated to Dr. Utubaku.

According to the letter, Dr. Utubaku was accused of auctioning the college’s unserviceable vehicles to cronies and family members without following proper procedures. The letter further stated:

“The 8th Governing Council has received allegations and a series of complaints against Dr. Utubaku from the Deans of Schools, the three unions in the College—COEASU, SSUCOEN, NASU—and the Director of Procurement for surreptitiously auctioning the college’s unserviceable vehicles and other irregularities. This violates the White Paper of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the report of the visiting panel into the affairs of the College (2011–2015).”

The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union has directed Dr. Utubaku to return the auctioned vehicles by October 14, 2025, and he has been suspended for three months pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation into the allegations.
