Rival Confraternities’ Gunfire Turns Deadly During Examination Signing-Out Party

One person has been confirmed dead following a violent incident during a signing-out celebration at Auchi Polytechnic in Etsako West Local Government Area, Edo State. The party, held at a popular hotel on Tuesday, marked the successful completion of the final examination paper of a cult leader.

The celebration reportedly involved members of two rival confraternities—the Black Axe and Eiye groups—who were simultaneously commemorating the signing out of some of their own members. According to witnesses, both groups discharged firearms into the air in celebration and exchanged verbal confrontations.

The situation escalated when a stray bullet reportedly struck a Mercedes-Benz belonging to a member of the rival group. “The colleagues of the member whose car was hit became enraged, alleging that the shot was targeted at them. Though the other group claimed no one was in the car, the disagreement quickly turned violent,” said a witness identified as Omorowa.

As tensions escalated, one individual from the aggrieved group allegedly used a vehicle to run over a member of the rival confraternity, resulting in a fatality. Another person was reportedly shot during the chaos.

The Edo State Police Command, through its spokesperson CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident, stating that one person was killed. Police investigations into the clash are ongoing.
