Dangote Petroleum Refinery to provide free fuel in select locations and cut petrol price to ₦841/litre, offering relief to Nigerians amid rising energy costs

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is set to launch a nationwide free fuel distribution programme on Monday while simultaneously slashing the pump price of petrol to ₦841 per litre, a development expected to transform Nigeria’s downstream oil sector.

According to the industry, the free fuel initiative will be rolled out in phases across select locations, though the refinery has yet to release a full list of participating areas. The move, is aimed at providing immediate relief to Nigerians struggling with high energy costs while showcasing the refinery’s production capacity.

Nigeria has long depended on imported petroleum products, exposing the economy to global price shocks and foreign exchange pressures. With petrol prices already biting hard on households and businesses, analysts believe Dangote’s intervention could reshape market dynamics, drive competition among marketers, and even force fresh government deliberations on subsidy policies.

Public interest in the announcement has surged, with many Nigerians eager to know how long the free fuel distribution will last, which regions will be prioritized, and whether the ₦841 per litre benchmark can be sustained over time.

The development underscores the refinery’s growing influence in the nation’s energy sector. As Africa’s largest refinery, the Dangote facility has consistently been at the heart of discussions on energy independence, job creation, and Nigeria’s long-term economic resilience.

If successfully implemented, the initiative could mark a turning point in the quest to stabilize fuel supply and reduce dependence on imports, while easing the burden on millions of Nigerians at the pump.
