●Her sister, 83, was hospitalized following the violent assault.

A wave of shock and sorrow has swept through the village of Triolet, Mauritius following the death of 79-year-old Santa Mathurasing, a retired schoolteacher, in a suspected home invasion on Sunday morning.

The elderly woman was found dead at her residence on School Lane, 7th Mile. According to preliminary findings by police investigators, the incident is believed to be the result of a violent burglary.

Mathurasing lived with her 83-year-old sister, Gyantee Ramnarain. Authorities say the two women were attacked, tied up, and gagged by one or more intruders who allegedly broke into their home during the night.

Emergency medical services from the SAMU confirmed Mathurasing’s death at the scene. Her sister, who was found alive but in a state of extreme shock and physical weakness, was transported to the hospital where she remains under medical care.

As of now, no suspects have been arrested, and the investigation remains ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the crime and identify those responsible.

The incident has sparked outrage and fear among Triolet residents. Many locals voiced growing concerns over what they perceive as rising insecurity in the northern region, citing a surge in thefts and break-ins, often linked to drug-related problems. Some residents expressed frustration that repeated appeals for improved security have not yet yielded tangible results.

Police have stepped up their presence in the area as part of ongoing efforts to reassure the public and gather crucial leads.
