EFCC Links Internet Fraud to Stricter Visa Restrictions on Nigerians
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede urges youths in the South-South to resist cybercrime, warning that internet fraud and money laundering not only destroy lives but also damage Nigeria’s economy and international reputation.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has blamed the surge in visa restrictions faced by Nigerians abroad on the rising cases of internet fraud and money laundering.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 17. 2025, the anti-graft agency explained that fraudulent practices by some individuals continue to sabotage Nigeria’s economy and global image, resulting in tougher entry requirements for law-abiding citizens.
The EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, while addressing youths in the South-South region, urged them to resist the temptation of cybercrime and financial fraud, describing them as “deadly traps” that destroy futures.
“Internet fraud, money laundering, and economic sabotage cost Nigeria billions of naira annually,” Olukoyede said. “They cripple national growth, deny citizens critical infrastructure, and rob young people of jobs and opportunities.”
He added that beyond the economic damage, “these crimes erode Nigeria’s international image and subject innocent Nigerians to stricter visa restrictions abroad.”
