At least eight people have died and thirteen others sustained injuries after a hot air balloon carrying 21 passengers caught fire mid-air and crashed near Praia Grande in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil.

The incident occurred during the country’s traditional June Festival celebrations, a time when balloon rides are popular among tourists. Disturbing footage shared online shows the balloon engulfed in flames as it plummeted to the ground, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Rescue teams rushed to the crash site, and all 13 survivors were immediately transported to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. The condition of some of the injured remains critical, according to local authorities

Governor Jorginho Mello confirmed the fatalities and praised the swift response of emergency services. “This is a tragic day for Santa Catarina. We mourn the loss of lives and are closely monitoring the situation,” he said.

Investigators have launched an inquiry into the cause of the fire and crash. While the exact cause remains unknown, early speculation points to a possible fuel leak or equipment malfunction.

The balloon was reportedly operated by a licensed tour company, though authorities are now reviewing its safety protocols and maintenance records.

The disaster has raised serious concerns about ballooning safety regulations in Brazil, especially during festive periods when demand surges.

Officials say further updates will follow as investigations progress.
