The Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, has granted thirty-one convicted inmates Prerogative of mercy.

This is according to a statement by Dayo Apata, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, while addressing newsmen in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

Apata stated that out of 453 inmates that applied for prerogative of mercy, 31 were pardoned by Governor Biodun Oyebanji in-line with Section 212 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Commissioner for Justice maintained that they were pardoned after receiving numbers of applications from inmates on death row and others serving various terms of imprisonment from Ekiti in the Nigeria correctional Services in some parts of the Country and ratified by the committee put in place by the State Government.

In a statement by Emmanuel Olorunshagba, the Comptroller, Ado Ekiti Correctional Centre, explained that the step taken by the state Governor would further reduce Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre which currently has a total of of 787 inmates (awaiting trial and convicted) as against the approved capacity of the Correctional Center which is around 347.
