Hon. Akin Rotimi, member representing Oye and Ikole Federal Constituency, has urged persons with disabilities to draw inspiration from the exceptional performances of Ekiti para-athletes, who recently secured medals at the National Youth Games in Asaba and the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

As Chairman of the Ekiti Para-Sports Association, Rotimi described the athletes’ gold, silver, and bronze medal finishes not only as a triumph for the state but also as a powerful reminder that disability does not mean inability.

Addressing physically challenged attendees at an event in Oye-Ekiti, the lawmaker encouraged them to aim high, stating, “There is ability in disability.” He urged participants to pursue ambitious goals and leverage their talents to achieve excellence in sports and other areas of life.

Plans for Para-Athletics Competition: To foster greater participation and showcase emerging talent, Hon. Rotimi announced plans to host a para-athletics competition later this year within his constituency. The event, he said, will provide a platform to discover fresh talents, expand opportunities for inclusive sports, and inspire a new generation of athletes with disabilities.

Recognition for Leadership and Support: Dr. Olusola Osetoba, Technical Advisor on Sports Development, commended Rotimi for his passion and commitment to para-sports, while also praising Governor Biodun Oyebanji for prioritizing sports as a key state agenda. She highlighted that Ekiti para-athletes have consistently proven their capabilities, validating the support and trust placed in them.

The para-athletes, in turn, expressed gratitude for the encouragement and backing they have received from Governor Oyebanji, Hon. Rotimi, and Dr. Osetoba, noting that such support has been pivotal in driving their continued success.

Empowerment and Advocacy: The event also featured donations of new wheelchairs, financial support, and a session on disability rights awareness, urging participants to stand firm in defending their dignity and advocating for inclusion in every aspect of society.
