The European Union (EU) has announced the deployment of 687 election observers to Anambra State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
The initiative falls under the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme, aimed at strengthening electoral integrity, peacebuilding, and inclusive democratic participation across Nigeria.
In a statement released in Abuja, the EU explained that the deployment was made possible through collaboration with seven of its 16 implementing partners — including the Kukah Centre, Yiaga Africa, International Press Centre (IPC), Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO), Nigeria Women Trust Fund (NWTF), ElectHER, and TAF Africa.
“The key feature of this unified deployment is to obtain a broad view of the election by utilising the diverse skills and experience of the EU-SDGN partners, analysing their findings, and compiling them into a comprehensive public report,” the EU statement read.
According to the EU, the 687 observers will work in coordinated clusters covering several thematic areas such as:
Election integrity and results verification
Disability inclusion, with sign language interpreters and accessibility observers
Gender participation, focusing on women’s involvement in the election process
Media and misinformation tracking, through trained journalists and fact-checkers
Peacebuilding and conflict prevention
Polling logistics and distribution of sensitive election materials
The statement emphasized that this is one of the largest civil society-led observer missions ever deployed for a state election in Nigeria, designed to provide a more holistic and verifiable assessment of the electoral process.
“Each cluster is collecting evidence from a different angle. When those findings are merged, they offer a fuller, verifiable picture of the election that no single organisation could produce alone,” it added.
Earlier, the EU-SDGN programme supported the signing of the Anambra Election Peace Accord, which brought together all political parties and candidates to commit to a peaceful electoral process.
The EU-SDGN is a multi-year, EU-funded programme working through Nigerian civil society organisations to promote credible, inclusive, and peaceful elections nationwide.
