Family mourns the matriarch remembered for her grace, humility, and strength
The family of Nigeria’s former President, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari (GCFR), has announced the passing of his last surviving wife, Hajiya Saratu Shehu Shagari, who died on Monday at the age of 89 following a prolonged illness.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by Capt. Bala Shagari, the eldest son of the late president and the Sarkin Mafaran Shagari, who expressed the family’s deep sorrow over her passing.
“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Hajiya Saratu Shagari, the last surviving wife of former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, GCFR, Turakin Sokoto,” the statement read.
According to the family, Hajiya Saratu passed away at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Monday.
Capt. Bala Shagari paid tribute to his mother, describing her as “an embodiment of grace, humility, and quiet strength, who lived a life of dignity and devotion to her family and faith.”
Funeral arrangements and additional details are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
