Former Governor of Jigawa State and prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Sule Lamido, has declared his readiness to support Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election—provided Obi emerges as the consensus candidate of an opposition coalition.

Lamido made this known in a recent interview, stressing the importance of unity and competence over party loyalty or regional affiliation. He noted that while he remains firmly in the PDP, he is open to aligning with any credible political formation capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and saving Nigeria from its current trajectory.

“If the coalition settles on Peter Obi or anyone else genuinely committed to rescuing Nigeria, I’ll support them. I am still PDP, but at this point, we should rise above tribal and regional politics. Leadership should be about capacity and vision, not where you come from,” Lamido said.

He questioned the benefits the North has reaped from producing multiple presidents, pointing out the region’s persistent underdevelopment. “What has the North really gained?” he asked.

Lamido also revisited the PDP’s zoning arrangement, explaining that it was originally conceived to address the fallout of the annulled June 12, 1993, election and to restore national trust. “It was a temporary solution, not a permanent system. Today, it’s become more of a burden than a unifier,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Middle Belt Forum has signaled growing support for Obi, describing the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate as a man known for keeping his promises. The Forum hinted it may have no better option than to back him again if he maintains his commitment to a single-term presidency and national reform.

The remarks by Lamido and the Middle Belt Forum further reflect the shifting dynamics in Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
