KSSQAA mandates formal approval for private school fee hikes and facility upgrades to safeguard parents and promote accountability in Kaduna’s education sector.

The Kaduna State Government has directed all private school proprietors and proprietresses to obtain official written approval before implementing any fee increases or upgrading school facilities. The directive, issued by the Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority (KSSQAA), aims to ensure transparency in private school operations and protect parents from arbitrary fee hikes.

In a circular dated 7th September 2023, Mercy Bainta Kude, Director of the Private Schools Department at KSSQAA, stressed: “No proprietor/proprietress should increase school fees or upgrade his/her institution without the approval of KSSQAA.”

The move comes as part of the state government’s broader effort to regulate educational costs, particularly at a time when public school fees are being reduced.

Procedure for Fee Increases: The directive provides a structured process for private schools wishing to raise fees:

The previous fee increment must have occurred at least three years ago.

A formal request must be submitted via letter to the KSSQAA Director-General, detailing the proposed increment.

The application must include minutes and handwritten attendance of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting where the increase was agreed.

Schools must provide justifications for the fee increase, including current student enrollment by level and a detailed breakdown of current and proposed fees.

KSSQAA has urged private school owners to strictly comply with the regulatory framework, emphasizing that the policy safeguards parents’ interests while promoting accountability in the education sector.

The Kaduna State Government reaffirmed its commitment to affordable, quality education for all residents and warned that schools violating the directive may face sanctions.
