Eastpointe, Michigan — A tragic incident unfolded at a McDonald’s in Eastpointe on Thursday morning as 39-year-old Jennifer Harris, a longtime manager and mother of six, was fatally stabbed by a fellow employee following a workplace dispute.
Harris, affectionately known by her family as “Jamma,” had worked at McDonald’s for over 15 years. Police say the altercation began when Harris sent a 26-year-old employee home early after a verbal dispute. Moments later, the same employee returned to the restaurant armed with a knife.
According to Michigan State Police (MSP), the suspect re-entered the building wearing a mask and launched a brutal assault on Harris, stabbing her multiple times. A customer in the drive-through witnessed the attack and quickly sprang into action. Firing a warning shot into the air to halt the assault, the armed customer chased the suspect as she attempted to flee and held her at gunpoint until officers arrived.
Responding to reports of shots fired and a stabbing, police arrived on the scene shortly after and took the suspect into custody. Harris was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities praised the actions of the customer, who is a licensed CPL (Concealed Pistol License) holder. Police noted that had the individual not intervened, the suspect may have escaped, potentially hindering the investigation.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Eastpointe community. Harris’ oldest daughter told reporters the two employees had appeared friendly before the incident, adding to the family’s devastation and confusion.
Another witness recounted the horror of the attack, saying, “She started stabbing her, and I ran for help. I tried to stop her, but it was no use — she stabbed her everywhere.”
The McDonald’s location where the incident occurred is a locally-owned franchise. In a statement, franchise owner Yusef Alcodray condemned the violence and expressed sorrow for the loss:
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our hearts go out to the victim’s family and loved ones. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in my restaurants, and we are taking this matter extremely seriously. The safety and well-being of our employees and customers is our top priority. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement, and the restaurant will remain closed until further notice.”
Eastpointe police have identified the suspect only as a 26-year-old woman and have not yet released her name or specific charges.
The investigation is ongoing.
