NAFDAC Uncover Group Distributing Suspected Fake Medicines Under Guise of Evangelism in Rivers State

A group in Rivers State, Nigeria, suspected to be distributing fake medicines under the pretext of evangelism, has been uncovered by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control ( NAFDAC ).

This is according to the announcement made on Monday, 19th May 2025, by Chukwuma Oligbu, the NAFDAC’s South-South Zonal Director.

Oligbu stated that NAFDAC operatives tracked the group to Abuloma Community Town Hall, where one of the members was apprehended while administering a suspected fake medicines to a member of the public. The agency seized many products, including unregistered eye drops, bottled water, cleaners, and tablets, which were evacuated to NAFDAC’s office for further investigation.

The seized products included items branded as Evangelist Jenkins Supernatural Water, Evangelist Jakins Cleanser, and Evangelist Jenkins Eye Drop.

Oligbu further revealed that the group, posing as an evangelical outfit, claimed that their products could treat ailments such as cancer, goiter, piles, rahes, arthritis, cataracts, fibroid, and glaucoma. He stated that the products lacked critical information, including ingredient lists and NAFDAC registration, including manufacturer details and expiry dates.

It was noted that some of the users of the eye drop have reported adverse effects, such as swallwn eyes, which the group falsely claimed was a sign of the drug’s effectiveness.

Oligbu stated that the evangelical outfit deceived people into buying these products, charging no less than N5,000 per item while claiming to offer free medical treatment.

However, NAFDAC has urged the public against purchasing unverified medical products and also vowed to continue its crackdown on illegal drug distrust to the public health.
