Two Nigerian nationals, identified as Austin and Ayo, have been killed by masked gunmen in Durban, South Africa. The assailants reportedly stormed Austin’s office and fatally shot both men at the scene.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), described the killings as “senseless and unacceptable,” calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.
She confirmed that the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has launched an investigation into the incident. Dabiri-Erewa also criticized South African authorities for failing to fully implement an early warning system designed to prevent such attacks.
NiDCOM extended its condolences to the victims’ families, assuring them of the Nigerian government’s commitment to securing justice.
Amid growing tension within the Nigerian community in South Africa, Dabiri-Erewa urged restraint, appealing to citizens not to take the law into their own hands.
She added that the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner has formally requested a thorough and transparent investigation from South African police.
