Olatunji Alahusa, the Nigeria minister of education, has proposed an extension of the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to two years.
According to Alahusa, speaking on Friday, April 4, 2025, during the visit of the new Director General of the NUSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, he stated that digitalizing the process of the scheme has made the racketeering and forging of certificates reduced.
The minister also emphasized issues of the exemption of part-time OND graduates for NYSC.
Applauding the leadership of the scheme, Alausa urged for the extension of the National Service from one to two years, with the expansion of NYSC skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Tranainig program content for Corps Members.
However, the new NYSC DG stated that the minister has been an integral part of the feats achieved by the scheme. He also advocated for the constitution of a database of Nigerian youths who travel abroad to obtain foreign certificates.
