Cape Town, South Africa — A video circulating on social media has sparked outrage in a Cape Town community, showing a Nigerian national allegedly threatening local residents who complain about his activities, which include illegal water connections and the unlawful conversion of standard family homes into overcrowded rental units.
According to several community members featured in the footage, the man is accused of diverting municipal water without authorization and transforming three-bedroom houses into high-density living spaces, reportedly hosting up to 20 tenants at a time. Neighbours claim the situation has led to increased noise, sanitation concerns, and strain on already limited infrastructure.
Adding to the frustration, residents allege that complaints to municipal authorities have been consistently ignored. Several sources suggest that the individual in question bribes city inspectors to avoid consequences. As a result, reports made by neighbours are allegedly funneled directly to officials who have been compromised, leaving complainants feeling powerless and unsafe.
“He told us to keep quiet or face consequences,” said one resident, stated. “We report him, but nothing ever happens. It feels like the law doesn’t apply to him.”
The video, which has gained thousands of views online, shows the accused confronting locals with aggressive language, weapon, warning them against reporting him further. His threats have reportedly created an atmosphere of fear among residents, some of whom claim they now avoid raising concerns for fear of retaliation.
Civil society groups and neighborhood watch associations are calling on the City of Cape Town to intervene urgently. “This is not just a by-law issue anymore — it’s a matter of public safety, accountability, and corruption,” said a local community leader. “The city must investigate these claims, enforce the law, and protect residents who are trying to do the right thing.”
At the time of writing, the City of Cape Town has not issued an official statement in response to the allegations or the video. However, pressure is mounting from both residents and social media users demanding swift action.
“This isn’t about nationality,” one resident commented online. “It’s about legality, fairness, and safety for everyone in the community.”
The situation underscores growing concerns in parts of Cape Town over illegal rentals by Nigerians, infrastructure abuse, and alleged corruption within city departments. Calls for transparency and accountability continue to rise, with many residents pleading: “City of Cape Town, do something.”
