A Nigerian national, identified as Ezekiel Kenechi Onwuegbusi, has been intercepted by officers from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) and the Anti-Drug & Smuggling Unit (ADSU) in Mauritius.
The Igbo Nigerian man who was in his thirties was apprehended on Friday morning at Plaisance Airport while attempting to smuggle cocaine into Mauritius. Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) and Anti-Drug Smuggling Unit (ADSU) officers grew suspicious of his nervous behavior as he discreetly exited the arrivals area after collecting his luggage.
During questioning, the man confessed to swallowing multiple balls of cocaine. An X-ray scan confirmed the presence of narcotics inside his body. He was immediately taken to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle, where medical personnel successfully expelled 61 cocaine packets.
Following this, the anti-drug unit conducted a controlled operation to the hotel where the suspect was scheduled to stay. Several hours later, another Nigerian national arrived at the hotel and was arrested. Authorities revealed that this second individual is currently residing in Mauritius without proper documentation.
The operation was led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Goinden and supervised by Superintendent of Police (SP) Ghoora from the airport’s ADSU. Investigations are ongoing as law enforcement continues to clamp down on drug trafficking activities
