Nigerian Senior Police Officer Dies in Auto Crash on His Wedding Day

What was meant to be the happiest day of his life turned devastatingly tragic for Superintendent Mustapha Garba Gumau, a senior police officer in Bauchi State, Nigeria, who lost his life in a fatal car crash just an hour before his wedding ceremony.

The heartbreaking accident occurred around 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2025, along the Gumau–Magama Gumau road in Toro Local Government Area.

SP Mustapha was en route to his wedding venue, accompanied by three close friends, when their Mercedes-Benz collided head-on with an oncoming Opel Vectra at Bargan Tsamiya.

According to the Bauchi State Police Command, the impact of the crash claimed the lives of the officer and two others. The trio was pronounced dead at the Toro General Hospital.

“The Command is in mourning,” confirmed CSP Mohammed Ahmed Wakil, spokesperson for the Bauchi Police. “SP Mustapha Garba was on his way to attend his own wedding when the unfortunate incident occurred.”

The Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Sani-Omolori, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, extending his condolences to the bereaved families. The bodies of the victims have since been released for burial.

Shock and grief have engulfed the community and the Nigerian police force as tributes pour in on social media. Many recall the joyful Facebook post SP Mustapha made just hours before the crash, sharing his excitement for the long-awaited celebration—unaware that it would be his final message.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljanna Firdausi,” wrote Jameela Adams.

Abdullahi Garba shared: “Three hours ago, he posted about the day he had long waited for—unknown to him, it was his last.”

Ugochukwu Prince poignantly added, “We shall not die on the day of our celebration. We shall live to give thanks to our God.”

What should have been a day of union has become a somber reminder of life’s fragility—a painful loss that has left an entire state mourning a hero who never made it to the altar.
