Nigeria’s most decorated junior fencer will headline a four-member squad competing in individual and team events at the continental championship in Senegal.
Inkosi Brou will lead Nigeria’s four-member fencing contingent to the African Junior Fencing Championships scheduled to hold in Dakar, Senegal, from February 16 to 20.
Nigeria’s most decorated junior fencer, the 18-year-old Brou, will spearhead the team as the country seeks success at the continental tournament.
Brou, who is the grandson of late Professor Dora Akunyili, former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has already etched his name in Nigerian sports history.
He became Nigeria’s first global fencing medallist after winning silver at the 2024 World Tournoi Satellite Cup and went on to secure bronze at the 2025 African Junior Championships. Currently ranked among Africa’s elite junior fencers, Brou sits 13th in the world in the men’s sabre category.
Joining him in Dakar are Mahathir Idongesit (men’s épée), Sara Idongesit (women’s épée), and Adebodunrin Thomas (women’s épée). The quartet will compete in both individual and team events.
While Brou will feature in the men’s sabre events, Mahathir will contest the men’s épée category. Sara Idongesit and Adebodunrin Thomas will represent Nigeria in the women’s épée individual and team competitions.
Meanwhile, national coach Ibrahim Alogba has expressed optimism about the team’s chances, noting that the championship will also serve as crucial preparation for the Commonwealth Championships scheduled to take place in Lagos this August.
