Nigeria’s Super Eagles Drop to 45th in FIFA Rankings as World Cup Hopes Dim
Nigeria risks missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup after slipping in the latest FIFA World Ranking, reflecting poor results in the African qualifiers.
Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, have slipped one place to 45th in the latest FIFA World Ranking, highlighting their ongoing struggles in the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.
The Super Eagles, winners of the Africa Cup of Nations three times, now face the looming prospect of missing out on their second World Cup in just eight years due to inconsistent performances in Group C of the African qualifiers.
Earlier in September, Nigeria recorded a narrow 1–0 victory against Rwanda in Uyo, followed by a 1–1 draw away to South Africa in Johannesburg. While the results kept them in contention, they failed to significantly improve the team’s global ranking or solidify their position in the group standings.
With decisive fixtures still ahead, mounting pressure rests on the players and coaching staff to revive their qualification hopes and secure a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
