Abuja, Nigeria – The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued an official statement to dispel growing public speculation surrounding the recent reduction in visa validity periods for most categories of nonimmigrant visas issued to Nigerian citizens.

According to the U.S. Mission, the decision is not connected to Nigeria’s position on accepting third-country deportees, its adoption of electronic visa systems, or its international alignments, including affiliations with blocs such as BRICS.

Instead, the U.S. clarified that the change is part of a global, standardized review of visa policies designed to enhance the security and integrity of the U.S. immigration system. This process involves applying technical and security benchmarks to ensure that all countries receiving U.S. visas adhere to consistent global standards.

In the statement, the U.S. Mission emphasized that Nigeria was not being singled out, and that similar reviews and adjustments are being carried out across various countries. The primary aim, the Mission noted, is to safeguard U.S. borders while maintaining lawful and secure international travel.

“This reduction is not the result of any nation’s stance on third-country deportees, introduction of e-visa policies, or affiliations with groups like BRICS,” the Mission said. “It is part of an ongoing global review… using technical and security benchmarks to safeguard U.S. immigration systems.”

Reaffirming its commitment to U.S.–Nigeria relations, the statement added that the United States deeply values its long-standing partnership with Nigeria and remains open to working closely with both Nigerian government officials and the public to help the country meet all necessary visa standards.

The move has sparked debate across social media and local media platforms, with some commentators attributing the decision to geopolitical tensions or Nigeria’s reluctance to accept deportees from the United States. However, the U.S. Embassy’s clarification appears aimed at calming those fears and reaffirming a continued commitment to safe, lawful, and mutually beneficial travel between the two nations.
