The fintech giant launches a formal investigation after resurfaced tweets and an online allegation trigger public debate on workplace conduct and accountability.
Paystack, the Nigerian fintech company acquired by Stripe in 2020, has suspended its Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Ezra Olubi, following an allegation of sexual misconduct involving a subordinate.
The situation escalated on Wednesday after a former associate of Olubi shared personal complaints on social media, which subsequently drew public attention to several controversial tweets Olubi posted between 2009 and 2013. Many of the resurfaced posts contained sexually suggestive comments, some referencing colleagues and minors, sparking widespread condemnation across X (formerly Twitter).
Some of the highlighted tweets read:
“I judge my female friends by the sound their pee makes. Thanks to the audio in my bathroom.”
“Save water. Take a bath with your neighbour’s daughter.”
A May 23, 2011 post stating: “Monday will be more fun with an ‘a’ in it. Touch a coworker today. Inappropriately.”
The renewed outrage has triggered broader conversations on digital footprints, workplace ethics, and public accountability. In response to the growing backlash, Olubi deactivated his X account.
In a statement confirmed on Friday, Paystack said it had initiated a formal inquiry into the allegations.
“Paystack is aware of the allegations involving our Co-founder, Ezra Olubi. We take matters of this nature extremely seriously. Effective immediately, Ezra has been suspended from all duties and responsibilities pending the outcome of a formal investigation.”
The company added that it would refrain from further commentary until the investigation concludes.
“Out of respect for the individuals involved and to protect the integrity of the process, we will not be commenting further until the investigation is complete.”
Founded in 2015 by Ezra Olubi and Shola Akinlade, Paystack has grown to become one of Nigeria’s leading payment technology firms, powering online transactions for thousands of businesses across Africa.
