Rafael Belaunde Escapes with Minor Injuries After Armed Attack on His Vehicle; Election Security Concerns Raised

Lima, Peru – Peruvian presidential hopeful Rafael Belaunde survived an assassination attempt on Tuesday, escaping with facial cuts and bloodstains but no serious injuries after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle south of the capital, Lima. Authorities have launched an investigation into the brazen daytime attack, which has intensified concerns over political violence ahead of next year’s national elections.

According to police reports, assailants riding a motorcycle targeted the SUV driven by the 50-year-old politician, firing multiple shots that shattered the vehicle’s front window. Television station footage showed Belaunde with blood on his face and shirt from lacerations caused by flying glass debris. He received immediate medical attention and is reported to be in stable condition.

The head of Peru’s National Electoral Tribunal, Roberto Burneo, swiftly condemned the assault, calling on the government to reinforce security measures for all candidates in the lead-up presidential election. “This violent act strikes at the heart of our democratic process,” Burneo stated. “We demand immediate action to protect those participating in the electoral campaign.”

The attack has sent shockwaves through Peru’s political landscape, raising urgent questions about safety, stability, and the potential for further violence as the election season intensifies. Analysts suggest the incident could influence public opinion and campaign strategies in an already polarized environment.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, and police have not disclosed possible motives or suspects. Investigations remain ongoing as authorities review security footage and witness testimonies from the scene.
