Peter Obi Slams Govt Inaction, Calls for National War on Insecurity
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has sounded the alarm over Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, warning that the country is “bleeding” under the weight of relentless violence. He has called on the Federal Government to immediately declare a state of emergency on insecurity.
In a statement released via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Obi condemned the fresh wave of bloodshed that claimed the lives of eight Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives in Edo State, five soldiers, and an estimated 58 civilians in Borno State during the weekend.
Describing the tragedies as clear evidence of a “full-blown security emergency,” the former Anambra State governor lamented that Nigeria’s casualty figures now rival those of countries officially at war.
“When over 100 Nigerians are killed in a single weekend, our nation can no longer afford to treat this as business as usual,” Obi declared. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims while urging security agencies to swiftly apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.
The Labour Party leader stressed the need for an urgent, coordinated national response, calling on the government to put aside all distractions and channel every available resource into combating insecurity.
“It is time to declare a national war on insecurity — to mobilize every resource, every agency, every state, and begin the process of reclaiming our nation from lawlessness,” he wrote.
Obi’s call reflects growing public concern over escalating violence across the country, with recent attacks highlighting the urgent need for decisive leadership and comprehensive strategies to tackle Nigeria’s deepening security challenges.
