Court Rejects Medical Excuse as Victor Giwa Awaits Transfer to Abuja for Arraignment

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested Victor Giwa, the Abuja-based lawyer of embattled Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, over alleged forgery and impersonation. Giwa was apprehended in Lagos on Friday following a bench warrant issued by Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Apo.

The arrest warrant, issued on Monday against Giwa and his co-defendant, Ibitade Bukola, came after both defendants failed to appear in court to answer to the charges.

According to court filings, the Inspector General of Police, in charge number CR/150/25, accused the duo of forging a letter dated June 28, 2024. The alleged document, prepared on the letterhead of senior lawyer Awa U. Kalu, SAN, was purportedly addressed to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) with the intent of halting a scheduled arraignment.

Justice Onwuegbuzie dismissed Giwa’s medical excuse, ruling that it failed to establish any valid reason for his absence. Bukola, on the other hand, offered no explanation or documentation to justify skipping the hearing.

Giwa is currently being held at the Zone II Police Headquarters in Lagos. Authorities confirmed he will be transferred to Abuja on Monday to face trial.

The case has sparked wide public interest due to its political undertones, as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has been at the center of several legal and political battles in recent months.
