Resident returns after over a decade to reclaim hidden fortune with police assistance; CP commands professionalism in delicate recovery operation.
MAIDUGURI – Police in Borno State have successfully assisted a woman in recovering gold worth ₦23.6 million, which she buried in the sand 15 years ago while escaping a Boko Haram insurgent attack in Mallam Fatori.
The operation, confirmed in a statement by the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, followed the woman’s recent return to the community and her request for help locating the concealed valuables.
According to Daso, the woman—whose identity was withheld—had buried the gold during the peak of insurgent violence in the area more than a decade ago. After returning to Mallam Fatori, she approached the police, who then mobilized a team to carefully excavate the site.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, commended the Divisional Police Officer of Mallam Fatori and his personnel for displaying “professionalism and integrity” during the sensitive retrieval process.
This recovery highlights a rare story of restitution amid Borno’s long-standing conflict, where many residents lost property and livelihoods during repeated attacks by insurgents.
The police did not disclose whether the gold was immediately handed over to the owner but affirmed that the operation was conducted transparently and in line with procedural standards.
