Portuguese Striker Diogo Jota’s Funeral Set for Saturday Near Porto
The funeral of Portuguese international and Liverpool striker Diogo Jota, along with his younger brother André, will be held on Saturday in Gondomar, a suburb of Porto in northern Portugal, according to local news agency Lusa. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. local time 09:00 GMT as confirmed by the town hall.
Diogo Jota began his football journey at Gondomar Sport Clube, a local club founded in 1921, making the location deeply significant for his farewell.
A wake may take place as early as Friday evening in a chapel adjacent to the Gondomar church, although the timing remains uncertain as the bodies of the brothers were still in Spain at the time of reporting.
The tragic accident that claimed their lives occurred overnight from Wednesday to Thursday on a highway in Zamora province, northwestern Spain, near the town of Cernadilla. Diogo, 28, and André, 25 — a professional footballer in Portugal’s second division with Penafiel — reportedly died after their vehicle veered off the road and caught fire, according to the Spanish Civil Guard.
Diogo Jota, father of three, had recently shared on social media that he got married on June 22, posting photos from the ceremony on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the football world, prompting tributes from fans, teammates, and football figures across the globe.
