Mounting party divisions, electoral losses and rising pressure force Starmer to step aside as leadership race begins
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has officially resigned following months of intensifying political pressure and deepening divisions within the Labour Party.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer acknowledged he was no longer the right person to lead Labour into the next general election, citing growing dissatisfaction among party lawmakers and supporters. His decision comes after a string of electoral setbacks that weakened his grip on the party and sparked calls for fresh leadership.
The pressure on Starmer escalated sharply after Labour’s disappointing performance in recent local elections, capped by a significant by-election defeat that emboldened critics within the party. The outcome has also boosted the profile of potential successor Andy Burnham, who is now widely regarded as a leading contender in the looming leadership race.
Despite stepping down as both Prime Minister and Labour Party leader, Starmer is expected to remain in office on an interim basis while the party organizes a leadership transition. A new leader is anticipated to emerge in the coming weeks.
The resignation marks a dramatic turning point for Labour as it scrambles to regroup ahead of the next general election.
