Less than 24 hours after her narrow loss in the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency by-election, Justina Azuka, candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has been appointed Senior Special Adviser on Special Duties by Senator Tony Nwoye, who represents Anambra North Senatorial District.
Azuka had contested the by-election to fill the seat left vacant by her late husband, Justice Azuka, who was abducted and tragically killed. Despite a spirited campaign, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Mimih Ifeoma Azikiwe of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as the winner, with Azuka emerging as runner-up.
Her candidacy had been widely viewed as a means to support her and her three children in the wake of her husband’s death. Senator Nwoye’s swift appointment, confirmed in a phone interview with our correspondent, has been described as a gesture of empathy and solidarity. A photograph circulating on social media shows the senator presenting Azuka with her appointment letter.
The role, which comes with a monthly remuneration of ₦200,000, is expected to provide Azuka with financial stability as she continues to rebuild her life. Many observers have applauded Nwoye’s decision, noting its rare display of compassion in Nigerian politics.
Reacting to the development, Anambra resident Peter Mmeagana praised the senator’s action, saying: “What Tony Nwoye has done shows the kind of compassion many Nigerian politicians lack. Giving her the chance to contest was noble, but following her defeat, this appointment ensures she can care for her family despite the attacks and criticisms she faced during the election.”
The appointment has drawn positive reactions across Anambra State, with many describing it as a humane and commendable step in supporting a widow navigating both personal tragedy and political setback.
