Media personality accuses Sowore of seeking attention, says fellow activist VeryDarkMan resonates more with Nigerians.
Nigerian media personality, Joseph Edgar, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, describing his brand of activism as self-serving and primarily aimed at remaining in the public spotlight.
Speaking during a television program, Edgar was asked why Sowore often resorts to extreme rhetoric in his criticisms of government authorities.
“I have a major problem with Sowore, whether you place him in the basket of a politician or as a human rights activist,” Edgar said. “What I see is a push for relevance. Many of his actions seem like attempts to constantly keep himself in the limelight. We all know what happened with his presidential bid. There’s always a twist in his rants to provoke a system reaction that ensures he remains in the faces of Nigerians and on the headlines.”
Edgar further argued that compared to fellow activist VeryDarkMan (VDM), Sowore’s influence is diminishing, while VDM continues to connect more directly with young Nigerians and effect change.
His remarks came in reaction to Sowore’s recent viral post on X (formerly Twitter), in which the politician launched a scathing attack on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!” Sowore tweeted.
The post sparked heated reactions both online and offline. Reports indicate that government officials subsequently reached out to Sowore, urging him to delete the tweet and desist from making statements perceived to damage Nigeria’s global image — allegations critics say are linked to his failed political ambitions.
