Stabbing on Metro Sparks Panic in Belle-Rose as Mauritius Faces Rising Violence
Commuters left terrified after a 35-year-old man was stabbed on the metro; incident coincides with nightclub shooting in Grand-Baie, raising fresh concerns over public safety.
Shock and fear gripped metro passengers on Sunday, September 21, 2025 evening after 35-year-old Steward Pierre was stabbed during a routine journey. The incident unfolded at the Belle-Rose station, where the assailant reportedly attacked Pierre before fleeing during the brief stop.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes, with terrified commuters rushing for safety while others desperately attempted to assist the bleeding victim.
Pierre was rushed to Candos Hospital and admitted to intensive care. His employer, Muzzamil Kataully, expressed deep sorrow, saying:
“He has a good job and a hard job. I am deeply saddened by what has happened.”
In an official reaction, Transport Minister Osman Mahomed described the stabbing as “a settling of scores” and reassured the public that a full-scale police investigation was underway. Officers are currently reviewing CCTV surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to identify and apprehend the attacker.
The metro stabbing coincided with another violent episode in Grand-Baie, where a gunman opened fire on an SUV parked outside a nightclub. The shooting, which quickly circulated on social media, further intensified fears of escalating insecurity.
With two major violent incidents occurring on the same day, questions about public safety and the rising spectre of violence in Mauritius have resurfaced. Both events have sparked public debate on the urgent need for stronger security measures to protect citizens in public spaces.
