Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has thrown his weight behind former President Goodluck Jonathan as the strongest potential southern candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2027 presidential race.

Speaking on Thursday, Lamido said no other southern PDP figure could match Jonathan’s political pedigree, calm temperament, and openness to dialogue if he decided to run.

“With all due respect to the PDP, I do not see a better alternative to Jonathan if he comes to PDP,” Lamido stated. “Who is there in PDP that can stand Jonathan politically — in terms of experience in office, cool-headedness, willingness to listen, and belief in partnership?”

Lamido suggested that other prominent PDP contenders, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, might step aside to pave the way for Jonathan, stressing that unity must take precedence over personal ambition to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

He dismissed Obi’s pledge to serve only one term as premature, pointing out that the PDP has yet to conduct its convention.

“Has there been a convention? Has he emerged?” Lamido asked, urging a strategic, collective approach to candidate selection.

Turning his attention to the Tinubu administration, Lamido accused the government of failing to fulfill campaign promises — particularly on improving electricity supply.

Quoting Tinubu’s own 2015 campaign remark, Lamido said:

“If we fail to give you power in four years, please don’t vote for us. I think that today, there is no excuse that he has not failed.”

He added that public dissatisfaction with Tinubu was widespread and growing, remarking, “By 12 noon, Tinubu is finished.”

With the 2027 polls approaching, Lamido called on the PDP to adopt a sober, reflective mindset in choosing its flag bearer, insisting that the people’s voice must be heard before the party makes its final decision.
