17-Year-Old Victim Identified as Katelynn Strate
A Louisiana teenager critically injured in a suspected road rage shooting gave birth to a baby girl before doctors determined she would not survive.
Seventeen-year-old Katelynn Strate was shot in the head on Sunday morning while riding in the passenger seat of a Ford Expedition in Hammond, located north of New Orleans. She was placed on life support to allow doctors to safely deliver her baby. The infant, born via emergency C-section at North Oaks Medical Center, arrived two months premature, weighing 3 pounds, 11 ounces. Despite her early arrival and small size, the newborn is reported to be stable and healthy.
Family members confirmed that Strate’s condition is irreversible, and she is expected to be removed from life support on Tuesday, August 27. “Her mother is devastated,” family friend Katie Cancienne stated. “She just lost her baby, and now she’s a grandmother.”
According to authorities, the shooting occurred as Strate, her boyfriend, and his sister were driving to his mother’s home when they became involved in a confrontation with the driver of a silver Dodge pickup on North Hoover Road. The two vehicles reportedly engaged in tailgating and brake-checking before the pickup’s driver allegedly fired shots.
Strate was struck in the head and rushed to the hospital. Police later arrested 54-year-old Barry West, the pickup driver, who was booked into Tangipahoa Parish Jail on four counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and obstruction of justice.
West allegedly told investigators he believed Strate’s vehicle had fired at him first; however, police reported no evidence of gunfire from her vehicle and no weapon was found inside it.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, describing it as a tragic example of a road rage confrontation with devastating consequences.
