“This Is Not Merely Violence – It’s Failure”: Peter Obi Slams Tinubu Over Benue Massacre

In the wake of the recent bloodbath in Benue State, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has delivered a searing critique of Nigeria’s leadership under president Bola Tinubu, blaming systemic failure for the horrific killings carried out by suspected armed herdsmen.

In a heartfelt statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, June 15, 2025. Obi described the massacre — which claimed over 200 lives of women, children, displaced persons, and even soldiers — as a tragic reflection of the country’s deepening security crisis and failed governance.

“My heart is heavy as I learn of yet another horrific series of killings in Benue — of women, children, soldiers, and displaced persons, all senselessly slain,” Obi wrote. “This tragedy has become too common in our national life, and the Benue situation now calls for a national emergency.”

Reports indicate that over 200 people were killed in a single, brutal onslaught. Entire communities were razed, families torn apart, and countless homes reduced to ashes. For Obi, this is more than an act of violence — it’s evidence of a system that can no longer protect its people.

He warned against the growing desensitization to mass killings in Nigeria, urging for immediate and decisive national action to stem the tide of insecurity.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, emphasized that leadership must be held accountable:

“This is not merely violence — this is the outcome of leadership failure.”

His powerful statement echoes a growing frustration among Nigerians, many of whom are increasingly alarmed at the frequency and scale of deadly attacks across the country.

As outrage spreads and calls for accountability intensify, Obi’s words serve as a sobering reminder: without urgent reform and real leadership, tragedies like Benue may continue to define Nigeria’s national story.
