By Bukola Kuteyi
The United States of America presidency administration led by President Donald Trump is perceived to shut down over 30 United States embassies and consulates around the world.
According to information, the embassies that will be involved include those in Africa to serve as part of the plan to reduce the country’s diplomatic presence abroad.
In a CNN report, it cite an internal US State Department document, it states that the embassies in the Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Lesotho, and South Sudan are among those proposed for closure, and the US consulate in South Africa may also be shut down.
“The document recommends closing 10 embassies and 17 consulates, mostly are in Europe and Africa, though they also include locations in Asia and the Caribbean. They include embassies in Malta, Luxembourg, Lesotho, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan.” The document.
Similarly, the proposal is stated to be a broader effort by the Trump-led government, remoured to be influenced by the Elon Musk-backed Department of Government Efficiency.
This is believed to help reduce the size and spending of federal agencies, including the State Department.
However, the official report of confirmation that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has approved the proposal and a spokesperson for the department are yet to confirm the leaked document.
