Tripoli, Libya –Libya’s Counter-Terrorism Forces, operating through the elite RADA Special Deterrence Unit, have arrested two undocumented Nigerian nationals on suspicion of drug trafficking, intensifying the country’s crackdown on illicit narcotics and migrant smuggling networks.

According to Libyan security officials, the two individuals were apprehended in southern Libya during a coordinated security operation. Authorities allege the suspects were involved in the distribution of illegal drugs, including cannabis and hashish, which were either intended for local consumption or destined for onward smuggling routes.

The arrests are part of an ongoing national campaign targeting organized crime syndicates operating across Libya’s porous southern borders, particularly in regions such as Sabha and Samnu. Over the past several months, multiple Nigerian nationals—estimated to be between two and four—have reportedly been detained in connection with drug-related offenses. These offenses range from the possession of hashish and hallucinogenic pills to the trafficking of more dangerous substances, including cocaine.

Following standard protocol, the detainees are expected to be transferred to legal authorities in cities such as Sabha, Tripoli, or Murzuq, where they will face further investigation and possible prosecution.

Libya, a key transit point for both migrants and smugglers, has witnessed a rise in cross-border criminal activities in recent years. Authorities say intensified security operations are aimed not only at halting the flow of drugs but also at addressing the broader challenges posed by undocumented migration and transnational trafficking networks.
