Awka, Nigeria — A law student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has died under controversial circumstances after she was reportedly denied access to her diabetes medication due to a dispute over a missing room key.

The student, identified as Ajana Isabella, was a resident of Elmada Hostel. According to accounts from fellow students, Ajana and her roommates lost their room key and approached the hostel management for a spare. However, the hostel mistress, identified only as Madam Bright, allegedly refused to provide the key unless a payment of ₦120,000 was made—₦40,000 from each of the three roommates.

Despite repeated pleas that the student urgently needed access to her insulin medication, the demand reportedly remained unchanged.

Ajana’s health reportedly deteriorated rapidly. She collapsed on Sunday, July 6, and was taken to a hospital, where she died on Wednesday, July 9.

The incident has sparked outrage among students and on social media, with many calling for an investigation into the hostel’s policies and accountability for those involved. The hashtag #Justice4Ajana is currently trending as students demand answers and justice for their late colleague.

University authorities have yet to issue an official statement at the time of this report.
