Vatican City Mourns as Late Pope Francis’s Funeral Procession Begins

Following the demise of 88-year-old Argentina pontiff, late Pope Francis, tens of thousands filled St. Peter’s Square, watching as Swiss Guards with staffs, flanked the coffine.

On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, the open wooden coffine of the late Pope commenced its solemn procession from Cada Santa Marta to Saint Peter’s Basilica, guarded by red robbed cardinals, and Swiss Guards.

Recall that the whole world was thrown into mourning on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, when the demise of Pope Francis was announced who died at age 88 after a stroke, coma, and heart failure.

According to images obtained by DAILY OBSERVER, thousands filled St. Peter’s Square, looking as eight Swiss Guards with staffs, flanked the coffin. The late Pope was carried by pallbearers as St. Peter’s bells tolled. The Catholic priests were all dressed in cassocked, some priests in choir dress, and nuts carrying candles formed a long procession behind .

However, the procession marks the start of the funeral rites for late Pope Francis, who lived modestly in Casa Santa Marta during his papacy.
