Nigerian VP to deliver national statement, unveil climate change commitments, and engage in high-level diplomatic talks

 

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Sunday, September 21, 2025, departed Abuja for New York, United States, where he will represent Nigeria at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The high-profile event will run from Monday, September 22, to Sunday, September 28, 2025, and will bring together heads of state, policymakers, and global leaders to deliberate on pressing international issues.

 

During the Assembly, Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the UN High-Level General Debates, highlighting the country’s position on global peace, security, and sustainable development. He will also participate in a series of side events and multilateral meetings, strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements on the world stage.

One of the major highlights of his visit will be the unveiling of Nigeria’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement at the UN special event on climate change. This move underscores Nigeria’s commitment to global climate action, renewable energy, and sustainable development.

 

Following the UNGA session, Vice President Shettima will proceed to Frankfurt, Germany, where he is scheduled to meet with officials of Deutsche Bank to discuss investment opportunities and economic cooperation before returning to Nigeria.
